Learning Language in Community

This pre-field workshop introduces participants to the Growing Participator Approach (GPA)—a proven, field-tested method used by cross-cultural workers around the world.

Rather than treating language acquisition as a purely technical skill, GPA understands language learning as inherently cognitive, relational, and spiritual—a process of entering another culture through shared life and presence. Participants learn how to plan language sessions that are rooted in relationship, work attentively with a language helper, develop a sustainable long-term learning plan, and assess progress over time.

The five-day experience also includes guided practice with a language helper, allowing participants to experience the approach firsthand, not just hear about it.
